Transport and Travel
Sometimes children and young people with special educational needs or a disability, need additional support getting to and from places that they visit.
Support can be given in a variety of different ways, from assisted transport to independent travel training.
We took one day a week of traveling to school from home and stayed on the public service bus. That's where I started to help him travel, first by doing the route completely with him on the bus, then following in the car and parking in different places until he finally had the confidence to try this on his own. His first careful trips by himself were a real milestone. Joseph's confidence has improved immensely because he now has a workplace at Marks and Spencer in Derby through the Prince's Trust. He is able to travel there completely on his own. We help him with the timings of the bus, and he's able to leave the house, go to wait at the bus stop, get on the bus with his bus passes, and then travel to Derby. Often, the next time I see him is when he actually arrives home, having traveled back on his own.
Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council have put together training to help people with disabilities travel safely on their own.
You might use public transport such as buses or trains to:
- Get to school
- Go to your job
- Visit friends or family
- Go out for the day
What is Independent Travel Training?
Independent Travel Training (ITT) is the delivery of training by staff in schools, colleges, voluntary services and day care services, for people who may have found it difficult to travel alone on public transport because of learning or physical disabilities.
Who is Independent Travel Training for?
Independent Travel Training is for people who have a learning or physical disability, which means they are unable, or are restricted in their ability, to travel alone on public transport. The ITT team, work with the school, college or provider, to deliver the training and can fit this into the curriculum.
What can Independent Travel Training do for me?
It can help you to feel confident enough to travel alone to local and more widespread landmarks, including school, college, work, work experience and back home.
