My Mental Health
Mental health issues can affect anyone. People of all ages, abilities and at all stages of life experience feelings, thoughts and emotions that can cause distress, upset or concern.
The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone. Whatever you are feeling, there are others who are just like you and there's always someone who wants to listen.
It is natural to struggle with life's challenges from time to time, but evidence shows there are small, practical things you can do to reduce stress and support good mental health and well-being. The Five Ways to Well-being is a helpful way of remembering how you can look after your mental well-being. We're all different, so it's important to find what works for you. Connecting with people: People who take time to develop relationships feel better about themselves. Sharing worries and problems with others can make them easier to deal with. Be active: You don't have to go to the gym. Find any activity that you enjoy and make it part of your life. Being outside in nature can be especially helpful. Keep learning: Learning new skills can boost your confidence and give you a sense of achievement. Setting yourself goals and challenges, whether at work or outside, helps to build confidence and deal with stress. You don't need to earn a qualification; just find something that interests you. Giving to others: From small acts of kindness, such as smiling at someone or saying hello, to larger volunteering efforts, giving can improve your mental well-being and help you build your social networks. Be aware: Paying attention to the present moment can support your well-being. Notice your feelings, thoughts, body, and the world around you. The Every Mind Matters website has some great tips and information on staying well. Small things can make all the difference. Practicing looking after your mental well-being when life feels good makes it easier to look after yourself when it feels more challenging. You can view our other videos to get some ideas on how to support yourself and your loved ones. You can also visit our website at www.nhs.uk/mental-health-wellbeing.
Many schools, colleges and universities have mental health support/counselling services. You can speak to the pastoral team or Student Support Services to find out more. GP’s can also offer advice/signposting and refer to more specialist teams.
If you are in immediate danger and need to speak to someone urgently, please call Samaritans on 116 123 for free.
