As you get older, you will need to begin thinking about how you want to live your life, for many this means living life more independently. That doesn't mean that you will have to give up help from family, friends and organisations, but rather, being able to make decisions about your life and how you live it.

Independence will look different for everyone, but it's important to plan ahead to make sure everything is in place to let you live your life with confidence and with the support needed to succeed.

Working toward independence can involve making changes to many parts of your life, and these changes will need to happen gradually, maybe over a number of years, to make sure you have everything you need to stay healthy and happy.

Thinking about your education, your future employment, volunteering or social care plans, where and how you plan to live and what services will be available to you is all part of working towards preparing for adulthood.

Watch this short film to hear young people sharing their thoughts on what to think about when looking at what to do next.
